Following a federal appeals court ruling, the TSA has absolutely no reason
not
to search you, detain you, separate you from your kids, harass you, or jail you.
[A] federal appeals court on Wednesday said screeners are immune from claims under a federal law governing assaults, false arrests and other abuses. In a 2-1 vote, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia said Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners are shielded by government sovereign immunity from liability under the Federal Tort Claims Act because they do not function as “investigative or law enforcement officers.” (Reuters)
Apparently, it is now up to Congress to act on this issue. But I’m sure Congress will get right on that.

I obviously don’t like this.
On the other hand, W created the TSA, and clearly must have felt that what was good enough for him was good enough for everyone:

TSA is the illusion of security.

TSA = Thousands Standing Around. It’s security theater.

If there’s one 3 letter agency that needs to be abolished, it’s the TSA.

That’s a visual I didn’t need.

To be fair, that doesn’t look all that thrilling for the agent either.

I’m not saying shenanigans don’t happen. I’m sure they do, and I want the jerks who perpetrate them to be held accountable.
But, I would like to say that as a person who is hand searched every single time I fly, I have never encountered a TSA agent who didn’t make every effort to be friendly, respectful, and professional while searching me. I did have one problem where my daughter of 5 at the time was freaking out at being separated from me for the screenings and they didn’t seem to know how to deal with that. Another time, just after 911, they took away my allen wrenches as possible weapons. Really? But no one has ever been physically inappropriate with me.

Usually I have to pay £30 for hand stuff and now I get it free with a flight? Bargain!

I have never enjoy one show and I’ve been to several.

I’ve never had an issue either, but I also do my best to be prepared in the hopes that I move through quickly and smoothly. I think some, but certainly not all, of the people who have problems are the ones who go looking for a fight. We went through Orlando last year, and there were a billion exhausted tourists trying to get home. The TSA guy who was herding the sheep was direct, blunt, but never ugly. One the the pax got all up in his face and asked for a supervisor. After she was done, I went over to the super and told him that his agent did nothing wrong and was just trying to keep the line moving. It’s a shitty job but, like many government gigs, it seems to attract some shitty people. Either that, or the job just crushes your soul after a while.
The main problem I see with this ruling is that the TSA agents now know they are basically untouchable. I just hope the problems don’t escalate over their newfound sense of invulnerability.

Hily shit. Just went thru TSA. They are dumb as fuck. They were flagging bags and search the wrong ones. They were having fits cu shit was showing up that wasn't in the bag, or at least the bag they were searching. Dumb as fuck.

They are low level functionaries. They need accountability.

Let’s be honest. TSA has a shitty job. But a necessary job. There is a great deal of animosity towards them and they don’t even carry firearms. Worst that can happen is that they touch your privates, waste your time, or dump out your neatly packed suitcase that you packed for hours.

I agree, it’s a shitty job. I don’t know if they hire shitty people (in general), or if the job just crushes your soul. For some people, though, it’s more than just a dumped out suitcase. The ruling in this case was against a woman who was jailed following her run in with the TSA. I do agree that some of the people who have problems with the TSA are there looking for a fight. But no government agent of any description should be allowed to do their job with impunity.

Well they didn’t arrest her. “ because they do not function as “investigative or law enforcement officers.””

The TSA are generally useless, but they do things that need to be done to prevent terrorism.

Mostly protecting against the last attack. I’m not saying they’re useless. Far from it. But no government agent or agency should operate with impunity.

i knew a guy who worked for them while going to school part time. The way they’re set up super fucks over new employees. “ Oh you just worked 2-10pm, yeah we’re going need you tomorrow 6am to 3pm , followed the next night by 9pm to 6am. Oh you want to form a sleep routine. FUCK YOU!” No wonder they have such shitty turnover. It is also staggering to watch how many people wait in line only to start getting ready when they get to the trays. I don’t think I could put up with that 3000 times a day.

The people who don’t do any prep until they get there are a pain in the ass. Before I get in line, I take off all my metal and put it in my carry on—belt, keys, phone, etc. Then, when I get there, I plop it down, take off my shoes, and cruise through. It doesn’t take that much thought.
As I said elsewhere in this post, I’m not sure if the TSA only has terrible people who apply, or if the job itself simply crushes the souls of the good people who do apply. It’s like the post office. I have never seen a larger collection of people who don’t have one single fuck to give.

And if they did, they still wouldn’t give it.
Yup. And they like me and I feel good about that.
And if the captain ever asks me to get off the aeroplane, I will respect his or her authority and deplane. But that’s another conversation.
